At the Literacy and Learning Centre, our cognitive assessments offer valuable insight into how your child thinks, learns, and processes information. These assessments explore a range of important cognitive skills, including:
- Verbal comprehension
- Visual-spatial reasoning
- Fluid reasoning
- Working memory
- Processing speed
Understanding these areas helps us create a clear profile of your child’s learning strengths and challenges—allowing for more targeted support at home and school.
Why Is a Cognitive Assessment Helpful?
Cognitive assessments can clarify how your child approaches problem-solving, attention-based tasks, and learning activities. They are especially useful when there are concerns about:
- Learning difficulties (e.g. dyslexia or slow processing)
- Attention issues or suspected ADHD
- School performance not matching ability
- Giftedness or twice-exceptionality (gifted with learning challenges)
Commonly Used Assessments
We use standardised tools that are widely recognised in educational and clinical settings, including:
- WISC-V (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – Fifth Edition): for children aged 6 to 16
- WPPSI-IV (Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence – Fourth Edition): for children aged 2 years 6 months to 7 years 7 months
- WAIS-IV (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale – Fourth Edition): for teens 16+ and young adults
Standalone or Part of a Broader Evaluation
A cognitive assessment can be conducted on its own or as part of a comprehensive evaluation, including assessment for:
- ADHD
- Dyslexia and specific learning disorders
- Academic performance concerns
Our experienced psychologists ensure the assessment process is calm, supportive, and child-friendly. Results are presented in a comprehensive report with clear, practical recommendations tailored to your child’s needs.
